Christmas Cousins

A present for my aunt, of her children. I rather like how they turned out.

Roommate Number "?"

Though Christian was never technically our roommate, and now actually goes to another school, his memory still haunts the place.

Roommate Number "N"

And this is my roommate Nate, or Roomnate. Odd that the goofiest of all of us should be displaying a relatively ungoofy expression (relatively, mind you).

Roommate Number "S"

I think it would be very hard to exaggerate Sean if he weren't smirking.

Roommate Number "M"

It's taken me years to get a good likeness of Matt, but I like this one. I kept going too hard on his nose; the whole thing came together when I reigned it in a bit.

Glenn Beck

This was done all in Flash for my Editorial Cartooning class. It was a fun challenge.

It's a New Me

Wanted to come up a self-promotional image for business cards, etc. I tried to go for a nice blend of of my animation and caricature style.

Autumn Luna

Another present for my girlfriend. As it happens, I enjoy revisiting the same subjects over the years to see how I can handle them in new ways.

The Senior Filme

So! Totally just changing my concept at the last minute before I go back to school and start.. you know... animating. Yikes! But I think I'll have fun with this.

These are some quick sketches of two of the main characters. I also have to design two birds, but they'll come later.

Thoughts so far: This guy is proposing to his girlfriend. He's dressed somewhat nicely but still not exactly right off the cover of GQ. He's a little nervous, hence some of the goofy features and unimpressive colors, and things definitely don't go as he expects. The girl is supposed to look sophisticated and kind of icy, hence the ideal body proportions and cold, delicate features. Physically, she seems to be in another league - this is intended to magnify his nervousness.

More on this soon!

The last columnist! The set is complete.

Mark

The editor from the Village News also has a weekly column, so he gets drawn too.

Christian doodle

Don't have much to post right now, so here's a little doodle of my friend Christian (or Trey, as others know him). He has such a fun face that I would love to do a full painting of him someday.

Columnists

These are more columnist headshots for the local paper - Sen. Jim Webb and Rep. Randy Forbes, two Congressmen from Virginia, and Walter Wilson with his dog.

Father's Day

I painted this for John Lacy, a.k.a. Dad, completing the face yesterday and finishing everything today. I'm happy with it, and what's more, it seemed to go pretty smoothly for once. When it comes to these paintings, sometimes they come effortlessly, and sometimes they oppose you at every turn.

More Luna

I took these pictures of my girlfriend with her camera, which is a delight to use. Yes, she is wearing a scarf at the beach, there.

Sketching Is Like So Cool

These sketches were done for my animation class last quarter. The people in the first image are friends of mine.

Scarlett Johansson finished

There, she's done.

And here is a Tommy Lee Jones drawing I did months ago that I've been painting intermittently since. It's not worked to much of a finish, but there you go.

House MD

I've done a ton of House pieces... In this instance, I used him because I wanted to concentrate my efforts on the technique rather than the exaggeration, and I am already pretty familiar with his face. I'm not generally a fan of the render-the-crap-out-of-it school of digital painting, at least when it prevents the piece from being exciting and textural, but most of my stuff stays kind of rough for illustration work so I'm trying to learn to get more polished pieces.

Guy

The as-yet nameless main character of my friend Nate's senior film. I did the concept design for him, and Nate's modeling him. It's startling, seeing my 2d work turned into 3d! We've experimented with ideas, and a lot of stuff doesn't work and a lot of stuff works beautifully. I learn a lot just from looking over his shoulder. Anyway:

Some exercises from my Digital Cel class last quarter. (I think something might be wrong with the lip sync file right now.)

Demo Reel

These are a selection of my hand drawn and Adobe Flash animations. I designed all the characters except Mushu, of course... and the flour sack, obviously!

Portfolio Pieces 2

I'm using this post to compile some recent and some less recent work on this blog as well. Soon I will be posting animations here as well as other pieces.

Jack Nicholson

Aaand finished, as far as I can tell.

Totally Obscure Celebrity

I've drawn Jack Nicholson several times so I feel I'm getting the hang of him. Another work in progress.

More Assorted Sketchings

Sorry I made the last files so big... these should be a bit easier to read. Some more caricature sketches from many different sources.

Assorted Sketchings

Just a few interesting things taken out of my sketchbooks and from loose papers... some are much older than others. I try to stretch my skills in character design and caricature simultaneously... sometimes it's hard to switch back and forth, for though the two share many similarities, what is appropriate for illustration is often not appropriate for animation.

Ben Linus Finished

Finished! Er, for now. Actually this required far too much tweaking and pushing and I don't think I'll touch it for a while. Ben's character is very elusive but I hope I've touched something there.

Ben Linus WIP

In honor of the arrival of Lost Season 5, which is off to a glorious start.

Michael Emerson is one of my muses. I've tried to capture his wonderful face many times, and I think there are so many directions to take. This is my favorite so far.

I will get it to a more finished state when I have time...
